Today in 1862, slavery was abolished in the District of Columbia. #RxHistory⌛ ⁠

On 16 April 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill ending slavery in the District of Columbia, the capital of the United States. The Compensated Emancipation Act was an important step in the long road toward full emancipation and enfranchisement for African Americans. It was the first time the US government had officially liberated any group of slaves.⁠

On 15 April 2014, hundreds of civilians were massacred in ethnic violence when rebels took control of #Bentiu, an oil-rich town in #SouthSudan. At the time, international media tagged the massacre as the single worst atrocity since the civil war began in December 2013.⠀⁠

Today in 2014, Boko Haram militants kidnapped 276 schoolgirls from their dorms in Chibok, Nigeria. #RxHistory⌛ ⁠

On the night of 14 April 2014, Boko Haram militants attacked the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, a small city in northeastern Nigeria. They broke into the school, pretending to be guards. In the first frantic minutes of their ordeal, 57 girls managed to jump from the trucks in which they were transported and escaped. The remaining 219 were taken away by the fighters.⁠
