DEADLINE: 17 December 2023
The Republic is hiring a Social Media Manager to join our editorial team. Responsibilities will include: developing smart and highly engaging social media campaigns, projects and content for the Africa-curious; growing our network of social media partners and influencers; managing our social media accounts and newsletters; driving subscriptions and magazine sales through our social media channels and providing relevant customer support; and supporting the team with online and offline audience engagement.
Depending on experience and milestones, the role could transition to Managing Editor, Head of Communications and Audience Engagement, or Head of Growth.
Who we’re looking for
The Social Media Manager position is an associate-level role, aimed at experienced (post-NYSC) social media strategists, writers and/or researchers with demonstrable interest in Nigerian and African affairs. You are highly attuned to what is missing from online and offline discussions about Nigeria and the broader African continent, and can produce the necessary information to fill that gap. You have strong communication and content instincts (writings, graphics etc.) and can be a reliable source of information and insights on underreported stories and issues affecting Nigerians and Africans at large. You are a good content creator but an even better content manager. You understand that just because something is important doesn’t mean it is automatically interesting—and you know exactly how to achieve both. You are client-driven, highly professional and strive to guarantee customer/audience satisfaction.
What you’ll achieve
As the Social Media Manager, you will work with our Editor-in-Chief and our Art Director in identifying The Republic‘s core social media audiences and developing The Republic‘s strategy for engaging such audiences. You will evaluate and improve on The Republic‘s content creation and distribution models, identifying possible content solutions and opportunities for growth. You will grow The Republic‘s presence on core social media and newsletter platforms. Among your core objectives will be 1) launching and managing a network of social media partners and influencers that can ensure the wide and meaningful distribution of The Republic‘s stories and products; and 2) guiding The Republic towards expanding into video-based platforms such as TikTok.
How to stand out
You will have:
⎈ A Master’s degree (preferred) and top-tier academic credentials (2.1 minimum undergraduate qualifications). Graduates of humanities and social sciences (e.g. politics, history, African studies) are highly encouraged;
⎈ At least three years of previous social-media related work experience (excluding NYSC);
⎈ Excellent analytical, research, writing and reading skills;
⎈ Proven ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear, accessible way;
⎈ Networking ability and knowledge of social media communities/landscapes;
⎈ Proficiency with Canva, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and Mailchimp;
⎈ Previous editorial and leadership experience;
⎈ Ability to work at a fast pace, remotely and independently while part of a team; and
⎈ An obsession with audiences.
How to apply
Then upload a CV. In lieu of a cover letter, in 600-800 words tell us about the most interesting social media campaign you know about. This can be a campaign you worked on or read about, but it must be a real campaign that exists. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a round of assessments, after which they may be invited for an interview.
Applications close 23:59 (WAT), 17 December 2023, but apply early as we aim to fill the position before then.
This position is paid, full-time and open only to candidates based in Lagos. Remuneration for this role is a N300,000-N400,000 monthly net salary (exclusive of benefits), depending on experience, skills and qualifications.
