Track Topics Join The Republic as an Editorial Assistant. Deadline: 31 October 2021

Deadline: 31 October 2021

The Republic is hiring a paid editorial assistant to support our editorial team on key aspects of our editorial-distribution process. For 6-12 months, this editorial assistant will rotate across our editorial, publishing and distribution teams building experience in developing print and digital editorial projects, managing authors and editors, commissioning and managing essays, and working with authors to produce quality writing in line with our style guide.

Previous editorial assistants at The Republic have either stayed on as editors with The Republic, enrolled in postgraduate programmes, or currently work in a range of fields including media, research and consulting. This highly competitive internship position is aimed at a current youth corper with clear media- / research-related ambitions, who:

is a frequent reader of The Republic;
has top-tier academic credentials (undergraduate degree with at least a 2.1 in economics, history, politics or related courses, preferred);
⎈ is a sharp, analytical writer (editorial or research experience is a plus);
⎈ thrives in a fast-paced environment;
⎈ is highly professional;
⎈ has demonstrable online and offline networking skills;
⎈ is able to work remotely and independently while part of a team; and
possesses excellent communication skills.

An understanding and passion for social video, history and historical images/archives, politics, broader African affairs and aesthetics, is a must. Familiarity with WordPress, productivity tools such as Slack and Notion, and social media tools like Tweetdeck, Buffer and Later are a big plus. While some media experience is great, you may find we operate quite differently.

Please note: we do not expect you to have all these skills or meet all our requirements. It is more important to us that you are willing to learn.

To apply, you will need to register or log-in. Then, upload a CV and cover letter (800 words describing the most unforgettable book/text you’ve read about Nigeria/Africa). Shortlisted candidates will be asked to demonstrate knowledge of The Republic and our core topic areas, and to attend a face-to-face interview.

Applications close 23:59 (WAT), 31 October 2021, but apply early as we aim to fill the role before then.

This is a challenging but rewarding full-time internship position open only to candidates based in Lagos. Our ideal candidate can start as soon as possible, and is able to commit to working with us for 6-12 months. Remuneration for this role is N50,000-N80,000 monthly, depending on skills and qualifications.
