On October 1 2021, Nigeria will be celebrating its 61st year of independence from British colonial rule. In marking this event at The Republic, we believe that Nigerians must discuss Nigeria’s history, where Nigeria is today as a country and what lessons Nigerians can draw from history as we plan for a more prosperous future. Crucially, one year after the #EndSARS protests made waves across and beyond Nigeria, there is an opportunity to discuss civil and social movements, their historical roles in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and the lessons we can learn from them.
Professor Toyin Falola is the Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair Professor in the Humanities and a Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a fellow of the Historical Society of Nigeria and a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters. He has published numerous books, including Key Events in African History: A Reference Guide, Nationalism and African Intellectuals. He has also edited many books including Tradition and Change in Africa and African Writers and Readers. His most recent publications are: Understanding Modern Nigeria: Ethnicity, Democracy, and Development (Cambridge University Press, 2021) and Wole Soyinka: Literature, Activism, and African Transformation (Bloomsbury, 2021).
Prof. Falola has received various awards and honours, including the Jean Holloway Award for Teaching Excellence, the Texas Exes Teaching Award, and the Ibn Khaldun Distinguished Award for Research Excellence, and the Distinguished Fellow, Ibadan Cultural Group. Join the world-renowned historian as he discusses Nigeria’s independence, where we are today and what lessons we can draw from history as we push for a more progressive future, especially through civic and social movements.
