Write History Join The Republic as a Paid Editorial Intern

DEADLINE: 12 October 2018

The Republic is hiring a paid editorial intern to write history on a new, exciting project. Responsibilities will include identifying African groups and communities often underrepresented in traditional accounts of history; pitching stories of historical relevance; and analyzing and summarizing historical trends/events into accessible timelines.

From tracing historical African societies to introducing audiences to new discoveries, and unknown historical figures and facts, this internship offers a unique opportunity to cover a variety of Africa-related topics in a concise, contextualized, clear and engaging style. The candidate will work in a team writing history-related stories like “Has Africa always been poor? This professor argues that the continent has always been poorer than other regions of the world. Here’s why he is wrong.” and “Years before colonization, this community in south-east Nigeria had developed its own writing system. Here are three things to know about Ekoi people.” The intern will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, pitching, and producing visual features.

Our ideal candidate is younger than 25 and possesses:

⎈ An undergraduate degree (history-related preferred)
⎈ Excellent writing skills
⎈ Knowledge of and passion for African history
⎈ An eye for great storytelling
⎈ Proven ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear, accessible way
⎈ Interest in reporting on a variety of history-related topics, especially African and black history
⎈ Familiarity with digital and social media
Ability to work at a fast pace, remotely and independently while part of a team
Prior experience writing for a news site helps, as do copyediting skills and some HTML know-how. You should be a voracious reader who is self-motivated and eager to learn.

An understanding and passion for social video, history and historical images/archives, politics, broader African affairs and aesthetics, is a must. Familiarity with design and Adobe creative programs is a plus.

To apply, upload a CV and cover letter. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide a writing sample, defend a position on a historical debate, and to attend a face-to-face interview.

Applications close on the 12th of October, 2018, but apply early as we aim to fill the role before then.

This internship position is paid and open only to candidates based in Lagos. The internship starts as soon as possible, and will run for six months with potential to be extended. Interns are encouraged to work part-time (20 hours a week).
