Today in 1938, former president of Ghana, John Kuf

Today in 1938, former president of Ghana, John Kufuor, was born. #RxHistory⏳️⁠

On 08 December 1938, John Agyekum Kufuor, a Ghanaian politician who served as the President of Ghana from 7 January 2001 to 7 January 2009, was born in Kumasi, Gold Coast.⁠
⁠
Kufuor was the 7th of 10 children of Nana Kwadwo Agyekum, an Asante royal, and Nana Ama Dapaah, a queen mother. In 1959, he moved to London after being accepted into Lincoln’s Inn to study law. In 1961, he was called to the London bar. In the following year, he was called to the bar in Ghana before graduating from Exeter College in 1964.⁠

In 1967, Kufour became chief legal officer and town clerk for the city of Kumasi. By 1969 he became a member of parliament and deputy foreign minister in the government of Kofi Abrefa Busia.⁠

Kufuor ran for presidency in 1996 but lost to Jerry Rawlings. On 23 October 1998, he was re-nominated by the New Patriotic Party not only to run for president again but also to assume the position of party leader. Kufuor won the presidential election of December 2000. He was sworn in as president of Ghana on 7 January 2001 and remained president until 7 January 2009 after winning the 2004 presidential election.⁠

Today in 1941, Japan bombed a US naval base in Pearl Harbour. #RxHistory⏳⁠

On 07 December 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked an American naval base at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, in a surprise military attack.⁠
⁠
Early in the morning that day, waves of more than 350 Japanese military aircrafts descended on Pearl Harbour, dropping torpedoes and bombs targeted at military equipment.⁠
⁠
More than 2,000 Americans were killed in the attack, according to National Geographic, while military aircraft and naval ships were destroyed and badly damaged. The day after the attack, the US declared war on Japan, ending their neutrality in the Second World War.⁠

The war concluded with Japan’s surrender after the devastating nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.⁠

Today in 1961, Frantz Fanon died aged 36. #RxHistory⏳⁠

On 6 December 1961, Frantz Fanon, one of the foremost writers of the 20th century on the topics of racism, colonialism, and decolonization, died of cancer in Bethesda, Maryland, aged 36.⁠
⁠
Fanon was born in Martinique on 20 July 1925, and he earned a degree in medicine and psychiatry from the University of Lyon. ⁠
⁠
While working as a doctor in French-colonized Algeria during Algeria’s struggle for independence, Fanon treated both French police and Algerians fighting for revolution—opposite sides of the same battle, and he began to observe the effects of colonial violence on the human psyche.⁠
⁠
Fanon saw colonialism as a form of domination and noted that its necessary goal for success was the reordering of the world of indigenous peoples. ⁠
⁠
Fanon’s most enduring lesson was perhaps that: transcending differences by empathizing with each other and not embracing notions of tribe, class, or descent—which are often created by colonialism—provides a better option for human coexistence.⁠
