Today in 2006, Nigeria agreed to extradite former Liberian President, Charles Taylor, to the Liberian government. #RxHistory⏳

On 25 March 2006, the Nigerian government agreed to extradite former Liberian President, Charles Taylor, to the Liberian government. Nigeria’s decision came days after Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberia’s newly elected president, requested the ‘closure’ of Taylor’s case.

Taylor plunged Liberia into a 14-year bloody civil war when he seized power from Samuel Doe in 1989. By 2003, when the war ended, 200,000 people had been killed, and more than half of the population became refugees. He was indicted by a UN special court in Sierra Leone in 2003 for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during the country’s civil war.

Taylor was granted asylum in Nigeria in 2003, as part of a deal to end 14 years of war that also destabilized neighbouring West African countries. After agreeing to accept Taylor, the Nigerian government rebuffed many attempts to put him on trial before an international court, saying it was awaiting a request from an elected Liberian government.

In 2011, he was found guilty by the Special Court for Sierra Leone of 11 counts of aiding and abetting war crimes in Sierra Leone and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

A Brief History of Black Islam from Africa to the Diaspora #OnSite⚡

Did you know that an Ethiopian man born in the early seventh century, Bilāl ibn Rabāḥ, was among the first to accept Prophet Muhammad’s teachings?

In this online essay, historian, Kai Mora, traces the trajectory of Black Islam from Africa to the diaspora. Mora reveals that by the second half of the twentieth century, Islam re-emerged as an ideological tool for African Americans fighting within civil rights and Black Power movements.

According to Mora: ‘Though some arguments within the global Black community have rejected Islam as another external interruption to African history and culture, Sheikh Mustafa Briggs, a scholar of African and Afro-diasporic Islamic history, emphasizes the interconnectedness of Blackness and Islam. In an interview with Sheikh Briggs, he explained the importance of understanding Mecca and pilgrimage as just one site and example of Blackness’ instrumentality to the development of the religion.’

Today in 1930, the founding president of the Central African Republic, David Dacko, was born. #RxHistory⏳

On 24 March 1930, the founding president of the Central African Republic (CAR), David Dacko, was born. Dacko presided over the nation’s Declaration of Independence in 1960 and ruled the Central African Republic as a one-party state. He was unable to improve the country’s failing economy, however, and with the CAR facing bankruptcy, he was overthrown by General Jean-Bédel Bokassa in 1966.

Dacko regained power and become president for a second time when he ousted Bokassa in 1979. However, his presidency was plagued with numerous problems and he was once again removed by the military.

Dacko's turbulent political career, during which he survived one assassination attempt, mirrored the tumultuous history of the CAR, which has seen ten military coups in recent decades. Upon his death in 2003, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Dacko was ‘a major political figure, who will be remembered for his long service to the people of the Central African Republic.’

David Dacko was an important figure in Central African politics for more than fifty years. Shortly before his death, he attempted to reconcile the CAR’s political leaders and people. He died on 20 November 2003.

In this online essay, writer, Foyin Ejilola, highlights the marginalization of women-regents in Yorubaland as well as the restrictions on their marital, sexual, and procreation rights.

According to Ejilola: 'The imposition of masculinity on these women implies that the ruling position they are assuming is only meant for men and that it is only right that they also become men. If these women who are supposed to be traditional leaders in their communities are being stripped of their identities, it begs the question of whether their persons are respected and honoured at all.'

Today in 1991, the Sierra Leone civil war began. #RxHistory⏳

On 23 March 1991, the Sierra Leone Civil War, an armed conflict that lasted for eleven years (1991–2002), began when the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), with support from Liberian rebel leader, Charles Taylor, and the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NFPL), attempted to overthrow former Sierra Leonean president, Joseph Momah.

The Sierra Leone civil war was one of the bloodiest wars in Africa. It resulted in more than 50,000 deaths and left about 500,000 people displaced in a nation of 4 million people. The conflict was particularly violent and long because both the RUF and the government of Sierra Leone were often funded by ‘blood diamonds’ mined with slave labour.

Did you know that Nigeria was involved in the Sierra Leone Civil War? In March 1993, the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) sent Nigerian troops to assist the Sierra Leone Army in recapturing diamond districts controlled by the RUF.
