We’re pleased to announce that our self-titled podcast, The Republic, has been longlisted for the 2024 One World Media Podcast and Radio Award! On 28 March 2024, The Republic joined the longlist for the 2024 One Media Awards under the Podcast and Radio category.

The One World Media Awards recognize the best media coverage of the global south. These include stories that break through stereotypes, change the narrative and connect people across cultures. The podcast and radio category includes audio features, podcasts, or single programmes from a series, that cover stories or topics in the global south, recognizing impact, and stories that have a compelling narrative.

The Republic has previously been nominated for the One World Media Awards in previous years. Our Editor-in-Chief, Wale Lawal, was nominated for the New Voice Award which recognizes young journalists who have made a substantial contribution to international journalism during the award year. The Republic was also nominated as a publication in the Special Award categories which recognizes independent media organisation based in the global south using media to address social, cultural, political and economic issues.

Our podcast, The Republic, debuted in October 2023 with a mission to make African history mainstream. The podcast explores pivotal Nigerian and broader African historical events and figures.

In our first season, host Wale Lawal traced the significance of Nigeria’s June 12 1993 election, 30 years on.

June 12, which marked the political rise of Moshood Kashimawo Olawale ‘M. K. O.’ Abiola and culminated in his arrest and death, no longer feels inanimate. Why was it such a pivotal moment? What did it feel like to experience it? And why has it remained engrained in Nigeria’s political consciousness? Our podcast answers these questions and more.
